Background
The Missoula Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is in the process of developing a new Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) for federal fiscal years 2026 through 2030. The purpose of the TIP is to list transportation projects for which federal funding will be sought over a five-year period. The TIP should reflect the region’s priorities, represent a consensus among state and regional officials, show a direct relationship to the long-range transportation plan, be financially constrained, and conform with federal air quality regulations as they relate to transportation. The MPO plans for TPCC to adopt the new TIP in August 2025.
Call for Projects
The MPO will open a call for TIP projects on June 16, which will be open through July 4, 2025. Projects submitted must meet federal and state guidelines for eligibility and a local, State or Federal sponsoring agency must be identified. Private individuals and organizations may recommend a project if the project is sponsored by the governmental agency in which the project is located and the project is listed in the MPO’s current Long Range Transportation Plan. Examples of sponsoring agencies may include, but are not limited to, Missoula City and County government and the Montana Department of Transportation. A local funding match is required for every project.
Please submit project proposals for consideration by July 4. Examples of previous TIPs are available on the MPO website here, or by contacting Glenn Ingram (information below). The MPO will then prepare a Draft TIP which will be available for public review and comment. The final TIP will receive local approval at TPCC on August 19, 2025.
